The Untold Story Of The Journalists Who Opposed Hitler
The Early Days of Nazi Germany
In the early days of Nazi Germany, there were a number of journalists who were willing to speak out against the regime. These journalists were often harassed and intimidated by the Gestapo, but they continued to publish their work. One of the most famous of these journalists was Carl von Ossietzky, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935 for his work exposing the German rearmament program.

The Kristallnacht Pogrom
The Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938 was a turning point for many journalists who had been hesitant to criticize the Nazi regime. The pogrom, which saw the destruction of Jewish businesses and homes, made it clear that the Nazis were willing to use violence to achieve their goals. In the wake of the pogrom, many journalists who had previously been willing to tolerate the Nazi regime began to speak out against it.
The Gestapo's Crackdown on Dissent
The Gestapo responded to the growing dissent among journalists by cracking down on the press. In 1939, the Gestapo arrested more than 100 journalists and shut down dozens of newspapers. Many of the arrested journalists were sent to concentration camps, where they were tortured and killed.
The Journalists Who Continued to Resist
Despite the Gestapo's crackdown, there were still a number of journalists who continued to resist the Nazi regime. These journalists often worked in secret, distributing their work underground. One of the most famous of these journalists was Hans Scholl, who was a member of the White Rose resistance movement. Scholl was arrested in 1943 and executed by the Gestapo.
The Legacy of the Journalists Who Opposed Hitler
The journalists who opposed Hitler played a vital role in the fight against the Nazi regime. Their work helped to inform the public about the dangers of Nazism, and it inspired others to resist the regime. The legacy of these journalists is one of courage and determination. They remind us that even in the darkest of times, it is possible to stand up for what is right.
Here are some of the most famous journalists who opposed Hitler:
* Carl von Ossietzky * Erich Mühsam * Kurt Tucholsky * Else Lasker-Schüler * Heinrich Mann * Thomas Mann * Bertolt Brecht * Hanns Eisler * Lion Feuchtwanger * Max Reinhardt * Albert Einstein * Sigmund Freud
