Waltharius and Ruodlieb are two of the most important Latin poems of the early Middle Ages. Composed in the ninth and tenth centuries respectively, they represent the high point of the Carolingian and Ottonian literary revivals.
Waltharius, an epic poem, tells the story of the Gothic warrior Waltharius and his love for Hiltgunt, a Burgundian princess. Ruodlieb, a verse narrative, tells the story of Ruodlieb, a young man who travels the world in search of adventure.
Both poems are notable for their sophisticated use of language and their vivid descriptions of life in the Middle Ages. They are also important sources of information about the history and culture of the period.
Waltharius
Waltharius was composed by the monk Ekkehard I of St. Gall around 900 AD. The poem tells the story of the Gothic warrior Waltharius and his love for Hiltgunt, a Burgundian princess.
Waltharius and Hiltgunt meet at the court of King Attila the Hun. They fall in love and run away together. However, they are pursued by Hiltgunt's father, King Gunther, and his brother, Hagen.
Waltharius and Hiltgunt are eventually captured by Gunther and Hagen. However, Waltharius is able to escape and rescue Hiltgunt. The poem ends with Waltharius and Hiltgunt marrying and living happily ever after.
Waltharius is a classic example of a medieval epic poem. It is full of action, adventure, and romance. The poem also provides a valuable glimpse into the life and culture of the Middle Ages.
Ruodlieb
Ruodlieb was composed by an unknown author around 1030 AD. The poem tells the story of Ruodlieb, a young man who travels the world in search of adventure.
Ruodlieb travels to many different countries, including Italy, Greece, and the Middle East. He encounters a variety of people and experiences many adventures.
Eventually, Ruodlieb returns home to Bavaria. He marries the daughter of the king and lives happily ever after.
Ruodlieb is a more light-hearted and humorous poem than Waltharius. It is a picaresque novel, which means that it follows the adventures of a single character as he travels through different countries and encounters different people.
Ruodlieb is also a valuable source of information about the life and culture of the Middle Ages. The poem provides a glimpse into the everyday life of people in the eleventh century.
Waltharius and Ruodlieb are two of the most important Latin poems of the early Middle Ages. They are both notable for their sophisticated use of language and their vivid descriptions of life in the Middle Ages. They are also important sources of information about the history and culture of the period.
Routledge Revivals is pleased to make these two important poems available to a new generation of scholars and students.
