Both sermons were delivered at a critical time in the lives of their respective speakers and their communities. The Sermon on the Mount was given early in Jesus' ministry, as he began to gather a group of followers and teach his message of love, compassion, and forgiveness. The Farewell Sermon was delivered by Prophet Muhammad shortly before his death, as he gathered his followers for the last time to deliver his final instructions and guidance.

Despite being delivered at different times and in different contexts, the Sermon on the Mount and the Farewell Sermon share many similarities. Both sermons emphasized the importance of living a life of righteousness, compassion, and peace. Both speakers also condemned hypocrisy, injustice, and oppression.

However, there are also some significant differences between the two sermons. The Sermon on the Mount is more focused on individual spirituality and morality, while the Farewell Sermon is more focused on community and social responsibility.

Similarities between the Sermons

  • Emphasis on righteousness: Both sermons emphasize the importance of living a life of righteousness and goodness. Jesus taught his followers to "love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you" (Matthew 5:44). Prophet Muhammad similarly taught his followers to "be kind to your parents, be good to your neighbors, and be just in your dealings with others" (Hadith).
  • Compassion and forgiveness: Both sermons also emphasize the importance of compassion and forgiveness. Jesus taught his followers to "judge not, that you may not be judged" (Matthew 7:1) and to "forgive seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:22). Prophet Muhammad similarly taught his followers to "forgive others, and God will forgive you" (Hadith).
  • Peace and love: Both sermons emphasize the importance of peace and love. Jesus taught his followers to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39) and to "blessed are the peacemakers" (Matthew 5:9). Prophet Muhammad similarly taught his followers to "spread peace and love among yourselves" (Hadith).
  • Condemnation of hypocrisy: Both sermons condemn hypocrisy and injustice. Jesus taught his followers to "beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy" (Luke 12:1) and to "judge not, that you may not be judged" (Matthew 7:1). Prophet Muhammad similarly taught his followers to "beware of hypocrisy, for it is like a hidden disease" (Hadith).

Differences between the Sermons

  • Focus on individual spirituality: The Sermon on the Mount is more focused on individual spirituality and morality. Jesus taught his followers to "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness" (Matthew 6:33) and to "let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). In contrast, the Farewell Sermon is more focused on community and social responsibility.
  • Focus on community: The Farewell Sermon is more focused on community and social responsibility. Prophet Muhammad taught his followers to "cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate with one another in sin and transgression" (Quran 5:2). He also taught them to "be kind to your neighbors, be good to your parents, and be just in your dealings with others" (Hadith).
  • Eschatological emphasis: The Farewell Sermon also contains a strong eschatological emphasis. Prophet Muhammad warned his followers of the coming of the Day of Judgment and taught them how to prepare for it. He said, "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger. I am a mortal, and I shall die, and you shall die, and we shall all stand before Allah on the Day of Judgment. Verily, the best of provision is righteousness, and verily, the worst of actions is injustice" (Hadith).

The Sermon on the Mount and the Farewell Sermon are two of the most significant and influential speeches ever delivered.

Despite their differences, both sermons have had a profound impact on their respective faiths and followers. They continue to inspire and guide people today, helping them to live better lives and to create a more just and peaceful world.
