The History of Cuba in 50 Events
Pre-Columbian Era
- 10,000 BC: The first inhabitants of Cuba arrive from the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
- 5000 BC: The Ciboney people, a hunter-gatherer society, settle in Cuba.
- 2500 BC: The Taíno people, an agricultural society, arrive in Cuba from the Orinoco River delta in South America.
- 1000 AD: The Taíno people build a complex society with a hierarchical social structure and a sophisticated system of agriculture.
- 1492: Christopher Columbus arrives in Cuba, claiming the island for Spain.
Colonial Era
- 1511: Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar founds the first permanent Spanish settlement in Cuba, Baracoa.
- 1515: Havana is founded.
- 1607: The first African slaves are brought to Cuba.
- 1762: The British capture Havana during the Seven Years' War.
- 1763: The British return Havana to Spain in exchange for Florida.
Independence Era
- 1823: The United States proclaims the Monroe Doctrine, which warns European powers not to interfere in the Americas.
- 1850: The Ostend Manifesto, a secret document written by American diplomats, proposes that the United States should purchase Cuba from Spain.
- 1868: The Ten Years' War, Cuba's first war for independence, begins.
- 1878: The Ten Years' War ends with the Treaty of Zanjón, which grants Cuba limited autonomy from Spain.
- 1895: The Cuban Revolutionary War, Cuba's second war for independence, begins.
American Intervention
- 1898: The United States declares war on Spain after the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor.
- 1898: The United States defeats Spain and occupies Cuba.
- 1902: Cuba becomes an independent republic, but the United States retains control over the island's foreign policy and military affairs.
- 1903: The United States leases Guantanamo Bay from Cuba for use as a naval base.
- 1933: Fulgencio Batista seizes power in a military coup.
Castro Era
- 1953: Fidel Castro leads an unsuccessful attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba.
- 1956: Castro returns to Cuba and launches a guerrilla campaign against Batista's government.
- 1959: Castro's forces overthrow Batista and take control of Cuba.
- 1961: The United States imposes an embargo on Cuba.
- 1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis brings the world to the brink of nuclear war.
Post-Castro Era
- 1976: Cuba adopts a new constitution that establishes a socialist state.
- 1989: The collapse of the Soviet Union leads to a severe economic crisis in Cuba.
- 1991: Cuba legalizes the use of the US dollar.
- 2006: Raúl Castro succeeds Fidel Castro as president of Cuba.
- 2015: The United States and Cuba begin to normalize relations.
Contemporary Era
- 2016: Fidel Castro dies at the age of 90.
- 2018: Miguel Díaz-Canel is elected president of Cuba.
- 2020: The COVID-19 pandemic hits Cuba hard, leading to a severe economic crisis.
- 2021: Cuba begins to reopen to tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2022: Cuba celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
Cuba has a rich and complex history that has been shaped by a wide array of events, from its indigenous roots to its colonial past and its eventual independence.
