About This Book

Callimachus was a Greek poet and scholar of the Hellenistic period, who lived from c. 310 to c. 240 BC. He was the chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria and a prolific writer of poetry in a variety of genres, including hymns, epigrams, and epyllia (short epic poems). His most famous work is the Aetia, a collection of aetiological poems that explain the origins of various customs and traditions.

Author Biography

Dr. J. C. McKeown is a Lecturer in Classics at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of several books on Greek literature, including A Commentary on Callimachus' Aetia (Oxford University Press, 2009).
